| Construction quality is of utmost importance at Shawnee. Every cabinet is hand-made,
one at a time, and must pass my top quality control standards. Only superior components and
construction methods are used, assuring that Shawnee cabinets will sound and look
great for a very, very long time. |
Cabinet Construction
|
 |
All Shawnee cabinets are
constructed from ¾” 7-ply voidless birch plywood. The corners feature
traditional dado-rabbet joinery, essentially the corner joinery version
of tongue and groove. This type of joinery provides twice the gluing surface
area as a standard box-joint, and is exceedingly strong. Titebond II wood
glue is used to secure the joints. |
|
 |
Additionally, every inside edge of the cabinets
is braced with full 1” square pine bracing and glued and screwed for
additional box strength. In fact, each cabinet has at least 70
pre-drilled and countersunk internal screws. I build these things
strong, period. |
|
 |
The finished interior is coated with a high quality satin black
enamel, protecting the wood and giving it a finished yet neutral look. |
|
 |
The back panels are also
constructed from ¾” 7-ply voidless birch plywood. The center panel is
removable, allowing for either open or closed-back operation. All baffles
on production cabinets now feature a port to increase speaker
responsiveness and cabinet resonance in closed-back operation. |
|
 |
The baffles are made from the
highest quality ½” 9-ply Baltic birch plywood. Baffles are not fixed to the sides of the cabinet, but rather are secured
only to the 1” bracing. The combination of the ½” thickness, high grade, and the
mounting process allows the baffles to exhibit their full resonance without any
compromise in strength and durability. |

Figured Maple Panels
|
 |
The figured maple panels
are really one of my signatures here at Shawnee. All panels are cut to size from
rough-cut hard maple, hand-picked by me so I can offer some beautiful figuring
examples. Panels are stained in a variety of traditional oil-based wood
finishes, and sprayed with multiple coats of nitrocellulose lacquer (the real
stuff) for a
brilliant finish. |
 |
Other woods are available for the panels, most
notably birdseye maple, mahogany, rosewood, and zebrawood. I also
can get, well, just about anything. Contact me for details! |
 | The panels reflect my admiration of the inherent
imperfections of figured wood, and the contrast achieved when it is incorporated
into an otherwise controlled and precise medium…they also ensure that each one
of my cabinets is truly unique. |
|
Tolex and Grill Cloth
|
 |
Vinyl (Tolex) covering is applied using an
industrial contact cement far superior to what you might find in retail
stores.
I use the stuff that is the best that I can get as an OEM. This ensures that the tolex will not come up at the seams and
edges over time. |
|
 | Grill cloth is attached
to a ¼” thick frame outlining the face of the baffle, half-wrapped and stapled
by hand to
precise measurements. I put forth a lot of effort to coordinate
the weave of the grill cloth in all dimensions. This is not an easy task,
and I've gotten quite good at it over time. |

Cabinet Hardware
|
 |
All exterior fasteners
are high-grade stainless steel, eliminating the potential for corrosion and
discoloration over time. |
|
 |
Cabinet Feet are
oversized molded rubber for ease of use on slippery surfaces or when stacking
cabinets. Feet are one of the only items that I offer separately as well;
If your amplifier has dinky, short feet on it, it may not clear the
(nominal) height of the exposed handle on the top of my cabinets.
Replace the feet on your head and you're good to go! |
|
 |
Handles are premium
grade, steel reinforced rubber strap handles, with nickel end-caps that hide the
fasteners and give a classy, finished look. Don't underestimate the
importance of a good cabinet handle. If you own a vintage Marshall
or HiWatt, then my handles will likely look familiar. |
|
 |
Corners are wrap-around
style, chrome-plated steel for superior fit, finish and durability. |
|
 |
Speaker and handle mounting
hardware are standard #10-24 machine screws, washers and lock washers,
paired with saw-toothed, thick steel T-nuts for extra
strength and holding power. |
|
 |
Only the best Switchcraft
jacks are used, and jack plates are black powder-coated steel. |
|
 |
Speaker wire is
18 gauge, cloth-covered, black and white stranded copper wire. |
